We are excitied to announce the creation of the Cornerstone Christian Academy Quiz Bowl Team!!!  Quiz Bowl is an academic competition for middle and high school students held throughout the state.  We have acquired membership in the Alabama Scholastic Cometition Association, and will be allowed to compete at several events this year.  Now we have to build and train a team to represent our school.

All students in grades 5-7 are eligible to try out.  Quiz Bowl tryouts will be held Thursday, September 10 immediately after school.  Eight students will be selected.  Quiz Bowls are made up of students who excel in academic subjects, and also those who are knowledgeable in art music, theatre, sports, or current events.  Try outs will consist of 20 question tests in the following academic areas:

Language (including grammar and literature)
Math
Science (physical and biological)
Social Science (history, economics, government)
Fine Arts (art, music, theatre)
Current Events

Students may test in the academic ares in which they are strongest.  They can take as many tests as they want.  For a good team, we will choose at least one student who is strong in math, at least one from Geography etc.  Students do not have to excel in every subject to be selected for the team.  If your child intends to test for Quiz Bowl, allow 15 minutes per test before you pick them up.

Most quiz bowl tournaments are on Saturdays at various schools throughout Alabama.  A Science Quiz Bowl is held in Mobile in February.  Also, our quiz bowl will compete at this years Beta convention in March.  Besides those two, we expect to be in 2 or 3 other competitions.

Quiz Bowls, like all competitive activities, require practice.  We plan to have one practice a wekk for one hour after school.  We will decide on a day after our team is assembled.

I know that CCA has some of the brightest students in Alabama, and I am confident we can do well at Quiz Bowl Tournaments.  However, this activity will require a time investment for the student and the parents.  Prayerfully consider allowing your child to try out for CCA's most exciting new activity.  We hope to see you Thursday!

In Christ,

Karen Travis

CCA will be starting a Beta chapter this year that will be open to students in grades 5-7.  We are very excited about this opportunity to provide reinforcement for character development, scholarship and community service.  Beta was organized 76 years ago, and still excels in encouraging their members throughout their school lives.  Recognition, Awards and Scholarships are all available through participation in Beta.  We at CCA hope to have an active, vibrant club that impacts the lives of our students, school families, and community.

Membership

CCA students can achieve membership in Beta by obtaining an A/B average in all classes on a nine-week period.  After the first nine weeks of this school year we will have an induction ceremony for students in grades 5-7.

Membership is maintained by:

  1. Maintaining A's and B's on report card.
  2. Attending 5 of the 8 scheduled meetings.
  3. Performing 5 hours of community service.

As a club, we will try to perform at least 1 community service project together.  Other hours can be acquired through helping at the students' church, yard work for a neighbor, or any mission project done by the family or church.

We will be attending the Alabama State Beta Convention in March.  In order to attend the convention, students will be required to participate in a scholastic or artistic event.  There will be more information on this once the club is organized.
